EU Regulation 2023/2108 updates nitrite and nitrate additive limits in meat, fish, and dairy products, with phased implementation from 2025 to 2027.
In application of the provisions of the Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2108 of 6 October 2023 amending Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council and the Annex to Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012 as regards food additives nitrites (E 249-250) and nitrates (E 251-252) in the following food categories:
- meat products
- processed fishery products
- milk products
As of 9 October 2025, in some of these products the limits of nitrite and nitrate additives will be updated and they will no longer be expressed in «Nitrites as NaNO2» and «Nitrates as NaNO3», but they will be expressed in NO2 and NO3 ions.
- For others the new limits will apply from 9 October 2026.
- For still more, the new limits will apply from 9 October 2027.
