Food Supplements Testing

Neotron aims to support clients with its expertise to put safe products in the market in order to guarantee the food safety and human health and well-being.

Food supplements are concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fibre, enzymes, various plants and herbal extracts.

Food supplements are intended to correct nutritional deficiencies, maintain an adequate intake of certain nutrients or to support specific physiological functions. Unlike drugs, supplements are not permitted to be marketed for the purpose of treating, diagnosing, preventing, or curing diseases.

In the EU, food supplements are regulated as foods.

Neotron offers analyses of vitamins and minerals which may be declared in food supplements according to Annex I to Dir. (EC) No 46/2002.

Food supplements are excluded from the obligation to indicate nutritional values. The obligation is related to the indication of the name of the categories of nutrients or other substances that characterize the product.

Furthermore, Neotron provides analyses of contaminants in food supplements like pyrrolizidine alkaloids, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), hydroxyanthracene derivatives and various further analyses.

Vitamins Testing

Neotron performs an extensive range of analytical and testing services for vitamins and supplements, enabling clients to verifying the quality of their products.
Vitamins are organic substances essential to organisms. They are included among those micronutrients whose daily intake through diet is necessary.

Determination of metals and minerals in food supplements

Contamination with toxic heavy metals and their adverse health impacts are major environmental problems in the world.
Heavy metals are high-density elements that can be toxic at high levels.
People can be exposed to these metals from the environment or by ingesting contaminated food or water. Their accumulation in the body can lead to harmful effects over time.

Amino Acids Determination

Amino acids are organic compounds that contain mostly carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms.
Proteins are chains of amino acids. Each protein has its own sequence of amino acids that confers the protein different shapes and different functions in human body.
In addition to their essential role in protein formation, amino acids are important to biosynthesis, neurotransmitter transport, and other biochemical processes.
Neotron performs the analysis of amino acids with different techniques

Astaxanthin in Supplements

Neotron performs the analysis of Astaxanthin derived from Haematococcus pluvialis using HPLC-DAD technique. Astaxanthin is a substance naturally present in some algae with the ability to protect cells from damage associated with oxidation.

Considering this property, it has recently acquired great importance in the prevention and management of different disease states. For this reason, Astaxanthin supplements have become widespread on the market, capable of facilitating its intake without resorting to the consumption of large quantities of fatty fish. The use of the novel food in food supplements containing astaxanthin levels of up to 8 mg, was limited to adults and older adolescents at 14 years old. The change was based on the opinion of the European Food Safety Authority.
