Determination of furan and alkylfurans in food

Furan and alkylfurans are process contaminants that can be formed in food from a variety of precursors including ascorbic acid, amino acids, carbohydrates, unsaturated fatty acids and carotenoids.

Furan and alkylfurans have been reported to occur in coffee, jarred baby food, ready-to-eat soup, potato-based crisps, fruit juices, breakfast cereals, biscuits, crackers and crispbread.
Furan is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and it is found in highest amounts in the liver.

Neotron performs the analysis of furan and alkylfurans by Purge & Trap-GC/MS technique, permitting to detect the residues in compliance with Commission Recommendation (EU) 2022/495of 25 March 2022.
