PPWR, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste

The safety of the food packaging

The PPWR, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste, governs the entire life cycle of packaging placed on the European market, from design to disposal. Unlike Directive 94/62/EC, which it replaces, it applies directly and uniformly across all Member States, harmonising the rules of the sector.

It entered into force on 11 February 2025 and its provisions apply from 12 August 2026, with several obligations phased in through 2030 and beyond.

For food companies the challenge is twofold: meeting the new sustainability requirements while continuing to safeguard food safety and consumer trust.

The production process of innovative materials such as bioplastics, compostable, recycled or reusable calls for targeted checks. Verifying food-contact suitability, monitoring contaminants and validating barrier properties becomes essential to protect health and meet PPWR requirements.

Neotron provides customers with rigorous control over food packaging, with targeted analyses of PFAS, metals, and bisphenols, defining the analytical protocol best suited to the type of material and compliance needs.
