PFAS and drinking water quality: what changes with the new decree

With the transposition of Directive (EU) 2020/2184 through Legislative Decree No. 102 of June 19, 2025, the regulatory framework on the quality of water intended for human consumption becomes even more stringent, particularly with regard to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The main changes introduced by the decree

  • New limits for PFAS will apply from January 13, 2026.
  • The value for the sum of PFAS will be reduced from 0.50 µg/L to 0.10 µg/L.
  • The “sum of PFAS” will be extended to 30 individual substances, including:

Chloro-perfluoropolyether carboxylate, MFS-N2 (ADV-N2)
Chloro-perfluoropolyether carboxylate, MFS-N3 (ADV-N3)
Chloro-perfluoropolyether carboxylate, MFS-N4 (ADV-N4)
Chloro-perfluoropolyether carboxylate, MFS-N5 (ADV-N5)
Chloro-perfluoropolyether carboxylate, MFS-M3 (ADV-M3)
Chloro-perfluoropolyether carboxylate, MFS-M4 (ADV-M4)

  • The limit for trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is introduced for the first time:
    10 µg/L starting from January 13, 2027.
  • Requirements for materials in contact with drinking water are also strengthened throughout the supply chain.

A regulatory update that confirms the growing focus on emerging contaminants and requires an increasingly structured approach to water quality management.
