Neotron expands its analytical portfolio with the determination of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), a bioactive metabolite of leucine
The beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) is an active metabolite of leucine, an essential branched-chain amino acid entirely derived from dietary sources. HMB is found in very small amounts in some foods, such as avocado, citrus fruits, cauliflower, and catfish.
HMB is synthesized from leucine through a two-step process that occurs in muscle cells and the liver. Leucine plays a specific role in regulating and controlling protein synthesis at the level of muscle cells, and HMB acts as a key active metabolite in this regulation.
Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of HMB supplementation, either alone or in combination with other amino acids and with an exercise protocol, in order to maintain or restore lean mass, strength, and muscle performance.
To support companies operating in the dietary supplement sector, Neotron offers HMB assay quantification using HPLC-DAD in both raw materials and finished products
