GMO Testing
Neotron offers GMO testing services for the food and feed industry, allowing clients to ensure their products meet EU regulations and are free from contamination.
According to Directive 2001/18/CEA, a living organism is called a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) when “the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur in nature through an intersection or natural recombination”.
According to EU regulation 1829/03 and 1830/03, only selected GMO events of defined vegetable species (soy, corn, cotton, oilseed rape and beet) are authorized for trading within the EU and a threshold level is set for labelling food and feed, or their ingredients, as “GMO” when exceeded.
The majority of GMO events contain common DNA sequences (e.g. 35S promoter and NOS terminator) that can be used for initial screening to rule out the presence/absence of GMO in the sample. In case of positive screening, a subsequent qualitative and quantitative analysis can be perfomed in order to asses the source and the amount of GM contamination.
Our GMO Testing Services
For the detection and quantification of GMO events, our lab applies the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) official methods, which make use of Real Time PCR as technique of choice.
In addition to GMO events authorised in EU, our lab proposes also analysis for the detection of non-authorised GMO events for soy, corn, rice, potato, and flax.
Our analytical portfolio is constantly updated following GMO European community legislation and our methods allow a complete characterization of your sample as far as it concerns GMO contamination.
