EFFICACY TESTING
Cosmetic legislation requires evidence support of efficacy claims and marketing communication.
Efficacy studies are requested to evaluate the effects of new ingredients or formulation in order to give a scientific support to demonstrate the finished product’s efficacy.
Claims substantiation can be realized through a multidisciplinary approach:
INSTRUMENTAL EVALUATION
SELF-PERCEPTION EVALUATION
CLINICAL EVALUATION
The aim of these studies is to evaluate in vivo the effect of the product on a specific panel of volunteers. The target selection is based on dermatological characteristics according to product type and to the study objectives.

#INSTRUMENTAL EVALUATION
In vivo instrumental evaluations, allow the measurement of specific skin parameters that provide scientific data that can be used to support the efficacy of the tested product. The experimental protocols are customized according to the type of product to be tested and the marketing claim.
VISIA® COMPLEXION ANALYSIS
SKIN IMAGE ANALYSIS
Visia® Complexion Analysis captures high quality, standardized facial images thanks to a non-polarized, cross-polarized and UV flash lighting according to the skin parameter to be analyzed. The analysis allows to record and measure specific skin parameters to evaluate the condition of the skin.
WHICH PARAMETERS?
SPOTS
BROWN SPOTS
UV SPOTS
RED AREAS
SKIN TEXTURE
WRINKLES
PORE SIZE
PORPHYRINS (evidence of bacteria)
PERCENTILE SCORES
VISIA® Complexion Analysis uses the world’s largest skin feature database to grade volunteer’s skin compared to others of the same age and skin type.

TRUSKIN AGETM
Visia® Complexion Analysis through the Trueskin AgeTM software performs an assessment of the overall skin condition: the subject’s actual age is displayed alongside the calculated apparent age of the skin (“Your truskin age”). This method allows the comparison of the skin apparent age before and after the treatment.
FOR WHICH CLAIM?
“SKIN LOOKS VISIBLY YOUNGER”
#SNIFF TEST
This is an olfactory test performed in vivo to verify the efficacy of a deodorant made by trained assessors in sensory analysis. Expert judges evaluate the odour of the treated armpit compared to the odour of the untreated one at different time steps and/or after sport workout.
FOR WHICH CLAIM?
DEODORANT EFFICACY, ANTI-ODOUR EFFICACY, 24H – 48H – 72H, FRAGRANCE PERSISTENCE.

#CLINICAL EVALUATION
Instrumental and self-perception efficacy studies can also be supported by a clinical evaluation of the skin, before and after the treatment.
The clinical assessment of specific skin parameters is performed by a dermatologist.
FOR WHICH CLAIM?
TESTED UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION
#SELF PERCEPTION EFFICACY
Supporting marketing claims can also be carried out through a “self-perception” efficacy evaluation made by the consumer. This efficacy assessment comes from the subject’s sensory and emotional stimuli induced by the product and by a self-evaluation of the benefits. The product is tested by healthy volunteers selected with specific dermatological or trichological characteristics in order to support and demonstrate the potential efficacy of the tested product. This approach is useful both to enhance instrumental results and to claim those effects that cannot be measured (silky effect etc…).
FOR WHICH CLAIM?
“–% OF WOMEN NOTICE THEIR SKIN MORE…”
