Food Contact Materials (FCMs)

Food Contact Materials (FCMs) are a range of materials and articles that come into contact with food at any part of its production, processing, storage, preparation, serving, and eventual consumption.

Typical FCMs are (for example):

  • machinery for food production
  • containers for food transporting
  • packaging materials
  • kitchenware and tableware

In Europe, Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 establishes the general requirements for all FCMs, while more detailed rules to regulate particular materials and substances are in turn derived from this framework to create EU-specific measures. There are also national rules of the individual member states which may cover specific materials. These legislative provisions also define criteria and methods for monitoring FCMs in order to protect the consumer.

Food Migration Testing for Plastic Materials

EU Regulation No 10/2011 requires that plastics intended for food contact comply with overall migration limits (OML) and specific migration limits (SML).

Permeability Testing

Determination of permeability is particularly useful for verifying the compliance of packaging and film with defined specifications and is also a useful technique for investigating the suitability of the material for a given food product in order to maximise its shelf-life.

Mineral Oil Hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOAH) in Food

Mineral Oil Hydrocarbons (MOH) comprise a large group of mixtures of hydrocarbons containing thousands of chemical compounds of different structures and size. MOSH and MOAH, more specifically, are acronyms for a complex mixture of chemical compounds.

Sensory Evaluation of FCMs

For the conformity of materials and objects intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, Regulation N° 1935/2004/EC requires that these materials are inert also from a sensory point of view so that they do not alter the organoleptic characteristics of the food with which they are placed in contact.
