Nutritional analysis

The great public is interested to the relationship between the feeding and the health and the choice of a diet suitable to the individual demands. In the White Paper of the Committee of May 30th 2007 on a strategy for Europe on nutrition overweight and obesity related health issues it is stated that nutritional labeling is one of the main methods for informing consumers about the composition of foods and helping them to make informed decisions. The communication of the Committee of March 13th 2007 named «EU consumer policy strategy 2007-2013 — Empowering consumers, enhancing their welfare, effectively protecting them» underlined whether to allow the consumers to effect aware choices is essential to guarantee at the same time an effective competition and the comfort of the consumers themselves. The knowledge of the basic principles of nutrition and an adequate nutritional information on foods contribute significantly to allow the consumer to make informed choices (Ref: Reg: 1169/2011).

Nutritional analyses are useful in order to develop nutrition labels conform to Reg 1169/2011 and and subsequent amendments and additions. Another purpose is to verify the compliance of any nutritional or health claim on the label.

ADDITIONAL ANALYSIS

depending on the composition or to verify sustainability of the claim

In some cases, according to the purpose or the composition of the product, in order to elaborate correct nutritional data, complementary analysis such as ORGANIC ACIDS, AMINOACIDS, SPECIFIC DIETARY FIBERS non-determinated with traditional enzymatic/gravimetric method are necessary.

In order to verify claim sustainability reported on label some analysis could be necessary, such as the detection of specific fat acids (omega 3, omega 6).

Nutritional Analysis in food supplements

Food supplements are excluded from the obligation to indicate nutritional values. The obligation is related to the indication of the name of the categories of nutrients or other substances that characterize the product. The quantities of the nutrients or other substances declared refer to the daily dose of product recommended by the manufacturer as shown on the label.
The indication of nutritional values referred to 100g of product, as in conventional products, can be misleading.
In case the operator needs nutritional values on food supplements, given the high concentration of nutrients it is essential to provide the laboratory with all the information available about the composition of the product. The laboratory will process specific analytical profile for the product in question. This analytical profile will not be expandable by default to other products of the same category with different composition.

Nutritional labels for extra EU markets

Neotron elaborates nutritional values conform to extra EU countries regulations (ie: USA, Canada, Australia). In such cases, in order to elaborate correct data, it’s necessary to supply the lab with information about ingredients, the market of destination,  the format of the sales unit both in terms of the contents of the pack and the size of the sales unit.
