PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES ANNEX II – REGULATION (EC) No 1223/2009

In order to ensure product safety, prohibited substances should be acceptable at trace levels only if they are technologically inevitable with correct manufacturing processes and provided that the product is safe.

Phthalates

  • BENZYL BUTYL PHTHALATE (BBP)
  • DI-(2-ETHYL HEXYL) PHTHALATE (DEHP)
  • DI-AMYL PHTHALATE (DI-N-PENTYL PHTHALATE)
  • DI-ISO-DECYL PHTHALATE (Isomers)
  • DI-N-BUTYL PHTHALATE (DBP)
  • DI-ISO-NONYL PHTHALATE (Isomers)
  • BIS(METHYLGLYCOL)PHTHALATE
  • DIISOPENTYL PHTHALATE [bis(3-methylbutylbenzene-1,2-dicarboxylate]
  • DDIISOPENTYL PHTHALATE [3,4-bis(3-methylbutyl)phthalate]

Phthalates are employed as plastic softeners in many different consumer products, so they can migrate from the packaging to the product. These substances are also used as solvents in many cosmetics.

Heavy metals

  • NICKEL
  • COBALT
  • CHROMIUM III
  • CHROMIUM VI
  • LEAD
  • ARSENIC
  • MERCURY
  • CADMIUM
  • ANTIMONY

Products imported from outside the EU have been found to contain heavy metals. Kids’ products too.

Mycotoxins

  • AFLATOXIN B1
  • AFLATOXIN (B1+B2+G1+G2)
  • OCHRATOXIN A

Mycotoxins are natural toxins produced by several fungi. They are present in plant materials such as cereals. Some mycotoxins can cause skin irritation.

Pesticides

  • RESIDUES

Pesticides are used to control organisms considered harmful for the host, such as plants. They may cause allergic reaction.

By-products

  • NITROSAMINES: NDELA/NDMA
  • SECONDARY ALKYL / ALKANOL-AMINES

Undesirable substances derived from combination either of long storage or ingredients interaction of cosmetic.

Solvents

  • METHANOL
  • PROPAN-2-OL
  • HEXANE

Solvents can be used in herbal extract industry.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

  • BENZO[A]PYRENE

PAHs are found throughout the environment in the air, water and soil, and can remain in the environment for months or years. A variety of cosmetics and shampoos are made with coal tar and therefore may contain PAHs. Repeated skin contact with the PAH naphthalene can result in skin redness and irritation.
